The mundane horror of this novel tips over into a story arc that takes the reader to the edge of something dark and immense. The protagonists are either victims or monsters – or both. This mature novel takes tropes from many sources, from video games to musical composition, and weaves something original that will sit behind your eyes and play games with your imagination for a long time after you turn the last page. The precise language casts a spell that drags us into a place of formless horror and dark humour. Oh yes you will laugh, but it will be the laugh of the wary. Read it for the quality of the English and the breadth of Ritchie's imagination, but try not to do so when alone late at night. This book made my train journeys things of dread and it wasn't just down to the overcrowding. Read it or miss out.
