Don't think new thoughts, don't improve anything, don't wander over the next hill these were the commandments for the men and women of the experimental village - one of those careful nurtured settlements established after the collapse of world civilization.
The rules were made by the benevolent Masters of the Island - and they had to be obeyed. To disobey was to be destroyed. But Robert Ventnor, villager with a dangerously high quotient of curiosity, was the exception. He fled - and evaded liquidation.
But he fled right into the hands of THESE SAVAGE FUTURIANS and thereby supplied the key that could blast apart civilization's second chance and destroy the world once and for all.

This wasn't the first novel I read as a youth. Tried Stranger in a Strange Land, gagged on the complexity of the plot (Hey, I was in 5-6th grade at the time)... Picked this one up as part of the old double books (one book on one side, flip it and get another different book on the other.).Enjoyed it back in the day, re-reading, it still maintained a lot of it's charm. Granted the plot was a bit simplistic, particularly as regards the human relationship and how it developing was the cure all for an post apocalyptic society. Still and all, it's premise is interesting.
Society fell apart, won't say why, but gadgeteers, do it yourselfers took the brunt of it.
Society then, has the corporate part living on effectively an island and using the rest of the world for controlled birthing experiments to raise a more placated humanity.
One of those that should have been placated was in actuality a descendent of a gadgeteer type. He's forced to escape and off we go.
Good action, quick paced, first mention in literature (I am aware of), of nanotechnology and a few other choice bits.
Just a fun read, though I did twinge a bit at some of the dialogue (I've become jaded in my old age).

I remember reading this book when I was a teenager (let's just say it was a very long time ago) and recently I found myself thinking about it. None of the local libraries had it. Then I found it on !! It was as good as I remember. Bravo .
